The True Cost of No-Code Algorithmic Trading: Money, Time, Hidden Expenses
TSLab costs 60,000 rubles per year. Sounds expensive?
Add to that: time for learning (3 months at 10 hours per week), data subscriptions, broker commissions, the cost of debugging mistakes.
The real price is 2-3 times higher.
I calculated all the costs of a year of using visual builders. Here are the honest numbers.
Direct Costs: Platform Licenses
TSLab: 60,000 rub/year officially. Hidden extras: second computer license (+30,000), historical data (15,000-30,000). Total: 60,000-90,000 rub/year.
NinjaTrader: Lifetime $1,500 or $999/year lease. Data separately (~$50-100/month). Total: 160,000-270,000 rub/year.
fxDreema: Free (10 connections limit) or $99/year Pro. Total: 0-10,000 rub/year.
StockSharp Designer: Free. No feature limitations. Total: 0 rub.
Hidden Cost #1: Data
Historical quotes for backtesting: 0-120,000 rub/year depending on source and quality. Realtime data for live trading: 0-180,000 rub/year for professional access.
Hidden Cost #2: Commissions and Slippage
A scalping strategy with 50 trades/day: ~77,500 rub/year in commissions. A positional strategy with 2 trades/week: ~10,400 rub/year. Trading frequency dramatically affects hidden costs.
Hidden Cost #3: Your Time
Learning the platform: 40-80 hours. Developing strategies: ~150 hours/year. Debugging and maintenance: ~60 hours/year.
At a developer rate of 3,000 rub/hour, that’s 630,000-810,000 rub/year.
Hidden Cost #4: Vendor Lock-In
Everything built in TSLab lives only in TSLab. Migration cost: 100-500 hours of work (300,000-1,500,000 rubles).
Hidden Cost #5: Limitations = Lost Profit
When you hit the builder’s boundaries, you either abandon the idea or learn programming. If an ML strategy could yield +20% annually and you’re stuck at +10% due to builder limitations — that’s -10% in lost returns.
Total Calculation: A Year of No-Code Algotrading
| Variant | Total Cost |
|---|---|
| TSLab (Russian market) | ~685,000 rub |
| NinjaTrader (US futures) | ~1,095,000 rub (first year) |
| fxDreema (forex) | ~490,000 rub |
| StockSharp Designer (Russian market) | ~760,000 rub |
This is 10-15 times more than the official license price. Because time is the most expensive resource.
The Alternative: Programming
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Learning Python (3 months, 200h) | 600,000 rub |
| Strategy development (150h) | 450,000 rub |
| Commissions | 10,000 rub |
| First year total | 1,060,000 rub |
| Subsequent years | 460,000 rub |
Code is more expensive the first year (learning). But cheaper long-term.
When No-Code Beats Code
No-code makes sense if: you’re not planning algotrading for years, strategies are simple, your time is worth more than money, or programming genuinely repels you.
When Code Beats No-Code
Code makes sense if: you’re planning for years, strategies are complex (ML, arbitrage), you have 3-6 months for learning, or you want independence from platforms.
Conclusions
The real cost of no-code algotrading: Minimum ~685,000 rub/year, mostly your time.
The alternative (code): First year ~1,060,000 rub, subsequent years ~460,000 rub.
After 2-3 years, code becomes cheaper than no-code.
My recommendation: If in doubt, start with a free builder (StockSharp Designer or fxDreema free). Spend 3 months. Build 5-10 strategies. See if you like algotrading. If you do — learn programming. The investment will pay off.
The key: Count the full cost. Not just the license. Time, data, commissions, vendor lock-in.
Knowing the real price, you’ll make an informed decision.
